English for Health Care Professionals

The English for Health Care Professionals program is designed for students who are working in or plan to work in an English-speaking health care environment. Doctors, nurses, lab technicians, and other medical professionals benefit from learning the general English language and communication skills for their field.

This program teaches students the language skills and vocabulary needed in health care and the workplace. The program covers speaking, listening, and reading on a wide range of topics-from technical skills to ethical concerns, from communicating with patients to discussing issues with colleagues. The program is divided into three courses: Health Care, Job Skills, and a choice of one Conversation Skills or Pronunciation class to improve their fluency and proficiency.

This program includes such Health Care Topics as:

  • Nutrition and Health
  • Effective Exercise
  • Influenza
  • Hospices and Coping Skills
  • Psychiatric Care and the Psych Ward
  • Over the Counter Drugs and Treatment
  • New and Alternative Health Options
  • Communicating with Doctors
  • Physiotherapy
  • Emergency Room

Job Skills Topics include:

  • -Making requests
    (ie: phoning rehab therapist, dietician, pharmacy, or asking for help)
  • -Understanding orders, instructions face to face or by phone
    (ie: for treatments, medications)
  • -Giving instructions
    (ie: teaching clients how to take medication, change dressings, instructions to colleagues)
  • -Explaining procedures, information
    (ie: to patients and families)
  • -Clarifying, elaborating
    (ie: making sure treatments, orders are understood, clarifying lab results over the phone)
  • -Interacting with physicians
    (ie: conveying observations, assessments)
  • -Interacting with other professionals
    (ie: articulating problems)
